I really enjoyed all 3 collections. Leanne, Korto and Kenley were absolutely the three best people in their season of Project Runway to show at Bryant Park. However, I am glad Leanne won because even though each designer created their own beautiful and original collection, Leanne’s went further because she convinced a lot of [skeptical] people that sustainable fabrics could be made into ethereal and wearable haute couture.
Before experiencing her collection, I was quite put-off by a lot of earthy-crunchy fashions made from tree-hugger friendly material. At worst, the clothes generally tended to look like something a nun on an ashram would wear and at best, they would look like the clothes someone practicing yoga or someone who shopped at Chico’s would wear. Think: easily wrinkled sacks of cotton, linen or hemp in muted peach and faded olive green and flax brown.
Leanne put a spin on sustainable fabrics by sculpting them into soft waves and floaty hemlines and pleats and tucks, etc. which made a lot of girls like myself, positively SWOON with desire for her designs. I’m not trying to undermine Korto’s or Kenley’s designs in any way. Korto’s beautiful green necklace gown and short yellow dress were some of my favourites, as were Kenley’s hand painted dresses – they were truly unique. But uniqueness and wearability of design isn’t the only thing that counts.
These were three women who were equally talented and came up with very unique and highly coveted collections. But Leanne pushed the envelope further. So many stylish people are looking for eco-friendly alternatives to be seen in but not at the risk of looking like a hemp or jute sack! Leanne delivered the goods and at the same time showed us that we could help protect the Earth for at least a little longer.
