The top knot is one of my favorite hairdos because it’s so darn versatile! Like a little black dress, it works for every occasion. I HAVE rocked\u00a0(and you can rock) a top knot everywhere – from an amusement park, to dinner for date night, out dancing with friends, and\u00a0to a black tie event. Whether you’re dressed up or down, the top knot is a hairstyle that always works.<\/p>\n

A few years ago, one of the top hair trends was the polished top knot. Now, the messy bun is where it’s at! Kendall Jenner rocked a messy bun with bangs at the 2015 American Music Awards<\/a> and her look was sleek and sultry. I decided to re-create this style myself, since I recently partnered with Goody<\/a> to try out three of their brushes that work well with my hair type. I found them in the Hair Appliances aisle at Walmart<\/a>, where they have a ton of Goody hairbrushes for all hair types.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve been transitioning from relaxed to natural hair, so my hair is thick at the roots and down the hair shaft (my naturally curly hair), but thin at the ends (the remaining relaxed hair). So I needed a variety of brushes that:<\/p>\n

-Would easily detangle my hair after washing it and also provide extra volume when styling: for this, I picked up the Goody TangleFix Brush<\/a>

-Would allow me to easily brush and style my hair into a sleek ponytail: for this I grabbed the Goody Clean Radiance Oval Cushion Brush<\/a>
\n\"Goody<\/p>\n

-Would tame those loose edges and add volume to my bangs: for this I got the Goody Amp It Up Medium Round Brush<\/a>
\n\"Goody<\/p>\n

Here’s how I used the brushes to achieve the messy top knot look:

1. I used the Goody TangleFix Brush<\/a> to loosely part my hair into two sections: my hair to put up in a ponytail and my bangs. If you’re like me and you don’t have bangs, but instead have layers, just take a piece in the front and swoop it to one side to give the illusion of bangs. You can easily tuck it behind your ear or use a bobby pin to keep it in place, if necessary.<\/p>\n

2. Next, I used the Goody Clean Radiance Oval Cushion Brush<\/a> to brush my hair up into a loose ponytail and to tease my hair in the ponytail before wrapping it around several times and securing the bun with bobby pins. The brush features copper bristles that massage the scalp – it goes through smoothly AND the copper bristles are said to reduce natural buildup over time*. (*Results based on consumer usage and perception study).<\/p>\n

3. Finally, I used the Goody Amp It Up Medium Round Brush<\/a> to brush any loose flyaway hairs on my edges and in the back. Then, I used it to create extra volume in my bangs by using it to lift at the roots, as the nylon bristles create more tension and help to add volume.<\/p>\n

Here’s my final messy top knot look, both dressed up and dressed down:
