Rent the Runway: haute couture that you love, wear and return

Anyone who knows me well knows that I am a fickle shopper. ‘Buy today, return tomorrow’ has long been my motto. Not everything of course – I do like to keep my closet well-stocked. But I like to buy something, try it on at home, test it out with a few accessories and see if it ‘works’. If not, it’s going right back to the store. But with more and more stores adopting a “No refunds” policy, what’s a girl to do?

Enter Rent the Runway. Dubbed the ‘Netflix of Haute Couture’, this new site brings high-end fashions to the masses. But not in a lower-priced, mass-produced kind of way. No, these are the actual runway pieces so you can wear what celebrities wear, at about one-tenth of the cost. You can rent dresses and exclusive runway pieces from fashion designers like Diane Von Furstenberg, Hervé Léger, Proenza Schouler and Christian Siriano. Siriano’s ready-to-wear pieces traditionally go for up to $3,000, but on Rent the Runway, you can get pieces from his line for $150 to $200.

Other perks include:
A reservation system to ensure that you can get a specific dress for the night you need it.
On-call stylists
Returns within 24 hours of rental, for any reason
A second style of dress as a backup, for an additional $25
A custom garment bag and fit kit including double-sided tape, bra strap adjusters and deodorant stain removers

Celeb style: Rihanna and Heidi Klum in ‘Pleasure Doing Business’ Pinstripe 3 Band Skirts

It’s safe to say that bandage skirts aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. Hervé Léger returned us to the era of the form fitting bandage dress and now bandage skirts are following suit. Celebrity trendsetter Rihanna, along with Heidi Klum clearly have the same sense of style - we recently featured them rocking the Martin Grant Flat Snake Chain Necklace, and now they’ve both been spotted wearing the Pleasure Doing Business Pinstripe 3 Band Skirt. And it’s easy to see why - this second-skin silhouette creates curves even if you don’t have them, and embraces them if you do. Simple and sleek, the skirt is made of a polyester and rubber blend and comes in a horizontal black and white pinstripe pattern. Max Azria & Miley Cyrus team up for Walmart clothing line

I stopped by Walmart last night to pick up my usual Walmart stuff – toiletries, snacks, stuff for the kitchen, etc. – and noticed a sign that read ‘Miley Cyrus & Max Azria clothing‘. Max Azria?! As in BCBG and Hervé Léger? It couldn’t be! But lo and behold, there was a giant banner of Max and Miley, smiling from ear to ear.

Walmart actually brought the two together to create the line for the Miley Cyrus Concert Tour this summer, of which Walmart is the title sponsor. The Miley Cyrus & Max Azria clothing line is only available at Walmart and includes tops, pants, shoes and accessories, all priced less than $20. Most pieces are even under $10. I checked it out and while the clothes looked exactly like what Miley Cyrus and her rock-and-roll tween set would wear, I have to admit they weren’t all bad. The collection consisted of predictable but cute pieces like latex-style and denim leggings, graphic tees, and colored stretch denim jeans and pleated miniskirts, a few silent scream-inducing pieces like stirrup pants (yikes!), but also some surprisingly chic vests, chiffon ruffle blouses and tie-dyed tanks.

Miley Cyrus’ rock-and-roll roots influenced many of the looks. The line reflects a continuation of her relationship with Walmart, where she is among the retailer’s top-selling recording artists. “I love creating looks that are all about personal expression and individuality,” said Cyrus. “Collaborating with Max Azria has been an amazing experience, and I’m really excited about launching this line with Walmart. There’s even more to come!”

Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Amanda Bynes is High (Waisted)

[Every week our style guru takes a celebrity look and breaks it down for you, our poor college fashionista. What does that mean? It means that while the celebrities are spending $5,000 on an ensemble, you don’t have to.

All you have to do is click on the goods and - boom - you can buy the entire ensemble. Yes, we know; there is a spot for her in heaven.]

So it’s (almost) March. I can’t believe it. Namely because I can’t believe I am actually this pasty and I don’t know if two months is enough time to rectify the albino-ness that is my skin.

But everywhere I turn it’s cute, short, tight, high waisted skirts. Ones that scream, “You have to have me!”And after seeing this look on Amanda Bynes, I know that I need to invest in some quality self tanner so that I too can rock this look without looking like I spent all winter soaking in a vat of White-Out.

So while I go grab some self tanner that won’t make me orange here is this week’s Celebrity Chic on the Cheap: Amanda Bynes is High (Waisted)

Skirt:

So bright, so cute, so perfect for getting your groove on during spring break…or any spring night. Oh, and so much cheaper than the Herve Leger option that Bynes is rocking. And if you want a darker option (because you can’t wait until the warm weather hits to rock this look):

 

White tank:

You can go simple with the top like Amanda, or spruce it up a bit for a little more va va voom. You probably already have a bajillion white tanks in your closet, but in case you want one more (because the rest have arm pit issues….what, just me?):

Jewlery

You can do just about anything with this look: earrings, necklace, bracelet… or all of them. I happen to LOOOVE this flower earring; turquoise and pink is a great combo. And this necklace adds some pizazz to the basic tank. Bonus: word necklaces are great conversation starters with the lads….

Black Bag

Not too big, not too small. Plus the ruffles are tres chic.

Shoes:

Basic black, only switched up a bit
