When I visited San Diego in May, I happened to be there on Cinco de Mayo so the celebrations were insane! We went out to an area called Old Town, a colorful historic park/neighborhood filled with Mexican restaurants, souvenir shops and live salsa performances. We loved it so much we went back the next day to eat, shop and take pictures.
