Academy Awards 2010 - red carpet fashion best and worst
March 8, 2010 by Ehmonie Hainey · 5 Comments
The 82nd annual Academy Awards aired last night and now that all the awards have been given out (special congrats to Mo’Nique and Katherine Bigelow!), it’s time to focus on the fashion winners and losers. On the red carpet there was the usual array of flowy, beaded gowns but a few were great hits and as usual there were some major losers. Check out our top 8 best and worst in Oscar’s fashion:
The Best:

Molly Ringwald looked beautiful in a blue Todd Thomas Grecian-style dress with one-shoulder detail and a gold metal brooch and matching arm cuff.
Sarah Jessica Parker looked sunny in a silk yellow Chanel shift dress with silver embroidery from Chanel’s 2010 Spring/Summer Haute Couture collection.
Gabourey Sidibe was a precious beauty in a blue, off-the-shoulder, beaded Marchesa gown.
Zoe Saldana dazzled in a Givenchy Haute Couture by Riccardo Tisci stunner with a glitzy bodice and ruffled, tiered skirt.
The Worst:

Note to Charlize Theron - floral boob-embellishments NEVER look good on anyone. Even if it is designed by John Galliano for Dior.
Diane Kruger - The mix of drapery-style chiffon mixed with camelia embroidered floral waist with black trim throughout is dreadful. And simply mortifying to look at. Even if it is from Chanel Haute Couture.
Kate Winslet looked like a stiff, sculpted piece of metal in an Atelier Yves Saint Laurent by Stefano Pilati bustier evening gown. Like an Oscar statue, in fact.
Jennifer Lopez - the last thing “Jenny from the block” needs is more junk in her trunk. This Armani Privé dress adds an extra set of hips that J. Lo just doesn’t need.

Amerie opens her high-fashion closet to Elle
November 12, 2009 by Ehmonie Hainey · 1 Comment

Rihanna may be the R&B girl of the moment but Amerie is no shrinking violet. The songstress recently let Elle Magazine take a peek into her closet and peruse her designer wardrobe. Her style includes a mix of girly hot pink dresses mixed with edgy, streetwise accessories (Pamela Love daggers and talon cuffs with Bliss Lau body chains — bondage much?) and full of haute up-and-comers (T by Alexander Wang, Rag and Bone) mixed with longtime celebrity faves (Chloé). Check out Amerie’s haute looks in the thumbnails below.

Rihanna runs this town in Barracuda shades by A-Morir Kerin Rose #FNO09

Rihanna celebrated Fashion’s Night Out #FNO09 at Intermix Soho and she came with the fierceness as usual. Black spandex hooded dress. Strong red lip. Black suede clutch. And her new signature - fierce shades. She wore the hand-painted, hand-distressed pyramid studded Barracuda sunglasses by A-Morir Kerin Rose ($350), the same ones she wore in the “Run This Town” video with Kanye and Jay-Z and Amber Rose. Is it us, or is she starting to morph into Amber Rose? It looks like the two fashionista’s styles are starting to overlap.

In my haute closet: Catherine Malandrino cropped bomber jacket
August 21, 2009 by Ehmonie Hainey · Leave a Comment

Is it too early to start shopping for Fall? I vote no, but then I’m a shopaholic fashion editor so I’m biased. That’s why I recently snagged this Catherine Malandrino cropped leather bomber jacket ($328) on Gilt Groupe. I couldn’t pass on it - it’s a smart, ultrafeminine shape that will work perfectly with my Fall essentials - dresses with patterned tights and chunky booties, long shirts with skinny jeans and the occasional other outfit thrown in between.
Wanna get a head start on your Fall shopping? Head over to Gilt Groupe for more fabulous fashion steals!
Haute Topic: Kings and Queens of Pop (and Bling)
June 29, 2009 by Ehmonie Hainey · 3 Comments
This week we’re paying homage to Michael Jackson - the man, the mystery, the music legend, humanitarian and fashion innovator and icon. Jackson’s unique sound and dance moves may have put him on the map, and his philanthropic efforts kept him there but it was really his fashion sense that really made him stand out and made us take notice. Early on he set trends with prepster looks (like his yellow cardigan and bowtie during the Human Nature era); colorful zippered leather jackets (a la Thriller), then later, sparkly socks and that single jeweled glove. Blinged out military-style jackets covered in sequins and crystals became his uniform alongside cropped black pants. Jackson’s style may have been a little over the top, especially for day to day, but designers and other celebrities paid attention and began to emulate his style. This season’s ever popular Balmain bandleader blazers were insipred by the King of Pop, and celebrities from Beyonce to Rihanna to Kim Kardashian to Victoria Beckham were all spotted wearing Jackson’s signature look. Are Designers Inspired by the First Lady’s Style?
March 18, 2009 by Ehmonie Hainey · Leave a Comment
There’s no doubt about it, First Lady Michelle Obama is a modern day fashion icon. Her looks are always stylishly flattering and chicly conservative. On the cover of this month’s O the Oprah Magazine she’s wearing a simple yet super-stylish slim orange dress, yellow short-sleeved cardigan and transparent belt. Though understated, everything she wears makes a statement, from multi-colored separates to an arm-baring dress or a chunky pearl necklace. And of course, designers have taken notice and want to dress her in all their latest like a little girl with her paper dolls. But are they also designing collections around her style? It seems so.
Isaac Mizrahi’s new collection for Liz Claiborne looks like he peeked into the closet of Mrs. Obama to derive inspiration. The ad campaign even looks like she should be starring in it! The collection consists of colorful separates, flirty and full patterned dresses and skirts, and vibrantly hued trench coats accessorized with bright and sunny shoes and accessories. Even Gap’s spring ’09 ads seem to have jumped on the bandwagon of Mrs. O’s casually refined looks. The campaign features primary-colored separates peeking out from underneath neutral trenches. What do you think? Are designers capitalizing on the First Lady’s look?
