If there was one season I could return to sender, it would be winter. Sorry, snow lovers, but the cold, wind, icy pavements and short days aren’t for me! My Caribbean blood craves heat, sunshine and daylight! I definitely get a mild case of the winter blues until warmer weather returns. One way I try to tackle winter blues head-on is by wearing brighter colors. When I lived in New York, it was so easy to default to wearing all black everything, every single day. But wearing brighter colors when it’s grey and gloomy out can actually help boost your mood. According to Leatrice Eiseman, author of The Complete Color Harmony, Pantone Edition: Expert Color Information for Professional Color Results, wearing brighter colors makes us feel happier and improves our overall mood on depressing winter days.
I make an effort to inject more bright colors into my winter wardrobe, to help cure my winter blues. I’m not talking head to toe brights. Sometimes I may just wear a sunny yellow sweater paired with a black coat and jeans. Or I might rock some punchy accessories to liven up a grey outfit. Adding pops of color may sound like a small thing, but how you dress definitely has a major impact on how you feel. It’s like they say, “Dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” Well, I’m dressing for the season I want (summer), not the season I currently have!
Do you believe in the power of wearing brighter colors to cure seasonal blues?
