There’s really not much else to say about last night’s CFDA Awards except for “Rihanna showed up in a nude, sparkly dress.” She was awarded the 2014 Fashion Icon of the Year title and she did not disappoint in making a major fashion statement! She and her stylist Mel Ottenberg chose Adam Selman, (Ottenberg’s partner and Rih’s River Island collaborator) to design the dress, which is simply made of mesh and 230,000 Swarovski crystals. “We definitely wanted to make it a little bit scandalous,” Selman told Style.com. And scandalous it was! He added that it was Rihanna‘s idea to wear the matching crystal-covered do-rag. And they further accessorized her look with a pink Pologeorgis fur stole, Manolo Blahnik heels, Paul Morelli ring and earrings and a Jacob pinky ring.
Aside from Rihanna’s nude dress, which stole the show AND the red carpet, there were other fashion hits at the event. Solange looked chic in a sparkly Calvin Klein column dress and wavy hair. Joan Smalls stood tall in a gorgeous navy Prabal Gurung gown. Lupita Nyong’o looked cute in a printed short set by Suno, paired with Sophia Webster shoes and Jennifer Fisher earrings. Marion Cotillard looked glamorous in a lacy white Dior number and Dior cross-strap pumps. Model Liya Kebede looked sharp in a sleek white blouse and printed skirt by Wes Gordon.
As for the misses, there were a lot. Jennifer Hudson‘s look missed the mark. Her Kaufmanfranco gown wasn’t flattering to her and we weren’t fans of her haircut and makeup either. We also weren’t wowed by some of the red carpet looks the models were wearing. Also, Rachel Roy’s floral print frock was unflattering.
