The usual Hollywood suspects were in attendance at the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel last night in Beverly Hills, California. I didn’t tune into the show, where apparently there were some drunken mishaps, accidental profane language and tons of jokes (thanks to dynamic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler). I instead followed the red carpet, where more important matters of style were happening! There were plenty of gorgeous looks, several odd ones and the basic ones not really worth mentioning. Here’s the 10 most attention-grabbing moments from the Golden Globes red carpet:
Paula Patton’s Ruffle Dress:
Am I the only one who loved Paula Patton‘s dress? I think I must be because I saw nothing but “What the h*ll is Paula Patton wearing?” all over my Twitter and Facebook feeds. She rocked a super tight, white Stephane Rolland Couture gown with a huge ruffle down one side. I thought she looked amazing – she DEFINITELY has the body for that dress – and her blunt cut bob made the look even sleeker. She accessorized with a pair of $895 Charlotte Olympia ‘Paloma’ platform heels.
Pretty pregnant ladies:
Kerry Washington, Drew Barrymore, Olivia Wilde and Elsa Pataky showed off their baby bumps on the red carpet and each of them couldn’t look more beautiful doing so. Everyone talks about that pregnancy glow and these ladies had it! Kerry wore an eggshell/light grey Balenciaga gown that perfectly accented her bump; Drew wore a floral Monique Lhuillier frock; Olivia wore a green, sequined Gucci gown and Elsa wore a black and gold halter-style gown.
Yes, Elsa Pataky looked gorgeous and glowing but can we talk about her hubby Chris Hemsworth? He really stole the show when they posed together on the red carpet together. I mean, LOOK AT HIM! THOR. SIGH.
Emma Watson’s Dress-Over-Pants Ensemble:
Everyone expects the usual ball gown for an event like the Golden Globes. But Emma Watson showed up in something different (thanks goodness!) – a open-backed red Dior dress paired with cropped trousers. This look is right up there on the ‘stuff I love’ list along with dresses that have pockets.
Amy Poehler Gone Glam:
Amy Poehler is not typically one of those women that you see on ‘best dressed’ or ‘style star’ lists (no hate). But last night we saw a different side to the funny girl. She looked totally glamorous in a stunning black belted Stella McCartney dress with an asymmetrical neckline. I’d love to see more of this glam girl side of her.
Style Star Lupita Nyong’o:
Someone who HAS been hitting every ‘best dressed’ list during the past year is new ‘It’ girl Lupita Nyong’o. With her perfect skin and figure, and gorgeous smile, she looks great in anything. She rocked this simple, red Ralph Lauren Cape Dress and wore her short hair with a side part. Just perfect.
Zoe Saldana in a Dress “Designed With Her in Mind”:
When it comes to fashion, Zoe Saldana‘s looks are either a hit or miss, nothing in between. Last night she wore a definite ‘miss’ – this dress “designed with her in mind” from her fashion friend (frenemy?) Prabal Gurung. The patchwork, the sheer hem, the flowers, the droopy straps – there’s so much wrong here that it’s obvious he was pissed at her about something when he sent her this.
Julia Roberts in this Menswear-Inspired Look:
Julia Roberts has certainly had her fair share of glam moments on red carpets. And now it seems like she just doesn’t really care anymore. She wore a black-and-white menswear look by Dolce & Gabbana that consisted of a white shirt, black tube top and mermaid skirt. Basic and boring.
Jennifer Lawrence, “Lawrencing”:
Jennifer Lawrence wore this white tulle Christian Dior dress with black bands at the waist and hip. The mummy-like dress has already sparked a meme, “Lawrencing,” where you cover yourself in white fabric, wrap some tape around it, and post the pic online. Brilliant.
Sofia Vergara in a Quinceanera Dress:
Sofia Vergara wore a black strapless gown by Zac Posen that looked like a grown up version of a Quinceanera dress. The super dramatic flared skirt looked like she was going to have problems sitting down for hours. Plus, that bright blue flower necklace looked random.
