Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the Abaete Fall 2007 show. A front row seat in arms length of Nigel Barker (America’s Next Top Model) was bonus enough, but the unexpected edginess of the show was an extra plus. Laura Poretzky’s dress collection drew from the 80’s, with minidresses, geometric prints, zippers, and patent leather, all reminiscent of a Robert Palmer video. The accessories were also the stars of the show – patent leather belts, Lucite jewelry, chunky heeled shoes, motorcycle gloves, conductor caps, satin scarves, zippered boots, and of course, haute handbags.
The color scheme was mostly dark – consisting of greys and blacks, with white thrown in for good measure. A handful of jewel-toned and shimmery satin dresses punched up the starkness of the black and white pieces. Draped and ruched dresses conjured up the feeling of the roaring twenties; an era of grace and beauty. Fur muffs, satin shawls, and fur scarves glammed up the otherwise casual collection.
